How is renovlies applied? A step-by-step explanation

Curious how renovlies is applied professionally? Read the full step-by-step process, from preparation to final delivery.

The process behind a perfect renovlies finish

Many people choose renovlies, but few know exactly how the installation works. In this article, we take you through the entire process, from preparation to the final handover.

Step 1: Inspecting and preparing the substrate

Before even a single strip of renovlies is applied, the team inspects the walls carefully. They check for:

  • Uneven spots and protruding parts
  • Cracks or holes larger than 2 mm
  • Dust, grease or loose material
  • Moisture stains or efflorescence

Any unevenness up to 2 mm is repaired with finishing filler. Larger damage requires levelling by a plasterer in advance. After that, the walls are mechanically sanded to create an even, well-bonded substrate.

Next, frames, floors and ceilings are carefully covered and taped off so glue or paint cannot reach unwanted areas.

Step 2: Preparing the wallpaper adhesive

Renovlies is installed with a special fleece wallpaper adhesive. Professional installers mix this adhesive in the right proportion in a wallpaper machine. The machine applies an even layer of glue to the wall surface, not to the renovlies itself as with traditional wallpaper.

This is an important difference: renovlies is glued onto the wall directly, so it does not need soaking time before installation.

Step 3: Applying the renovlies strips

The renovlies is applied in vertical strips from top to bottom. The strips are cut slightly longer so they extend past the skirting and ceiling. They are then trimmed neatly afterwards.

The strips are joined seamlessly. When overlap cutting is used, both layers are cut through and the excess material is removed. This leaves the strips aligned perfectly without overlap.

Corners, sockets and switch openings are measured carefully and cut out with a sharp utility knife.

Step 4: Finishing and control

After application, each strip is checked for:

  • Air bubbles, which are rolled out with a special roller
  • Loose seams, which are reglued
  • Irregularities, which are smoothed out

Only when the entire surface has been checked and approved does the team move on to the next room.

Step 5: Drying time

After installation, the renovlies must dry fully before it can be painted. The drying time depends on temperature, ventilation and humidity. In a well ventilated room, this usually takes 12 to 24 hours.

We always advise waiting until the renovlies is completely dry. Painting too soon can lead to air bubbles or the material coming loose.

Step 6: Painting, if included

As part of a combined package, the painting is done after the renovlies has dried. High-quality latex paint is used and mixed in the desired RAL colour. Depending on the package, one or two coats are applied.

Step 7: Handover and inspection

After all work is complete, the room is cleaned and the protective materials are removed. The team walks through the home with the client for a final inspection. Any points are resolved immediately before leaving.

How long does an average project take?

An average new-build home with 80 to 120 m2 of living space can be fully wallpapered by an experienced team in one day. Combined with painting, a full project usually takes 2 to 3 working days, including drying time.
