A clean ceiling: what is the best approach?
The ceiling is one of the most visible surfaces in a room. Irregularities, cracks or a poor finish stand out immediately, especially under artificial light. So which approach is right for your situation?
Option 1: Plastering the ceiling
Plastering gives the most perfect, smooth result. A plasterer applies a thin layer of gypsum plaster, which is sanded and painted after drying. The result is a mirror-smooth ceiling without texture.
Advantages: - Absolute smoothness, even under raking light - No texture or visible material - Long service life with proper maintenance
Drawbacks: - Higher cost than painting alone - Longer drying time, around 2 to 4 days - In new-build homes there is a risk of cracking in the first year
Option 2: Painting the ceiling without plastering
If a ceiling is reasonably flat, it can also be painted directly, provided the surface is prepared properly. This is the quickest and most affordable option.
Advantages: - Fast and cost-effective - No long drying times - A good result on flat surfaces
Drawbacks: - Small irregularities remain visible - Not suitable for large differences in height or cracks
Option 3: Plastering and painting the ceiling as a package
This is the most complete approach. The ceiling is plastered first for a perfectly smooth base and then painted in the desired colour. This gives the best final result and is what Bouwcons typically carries out in its ceiling package.
When is ceiling plastering necessary?
- In new-build homes with visible joints or irregularities in gypsum board
- In renovations where the existing plaster has come loose
- When you want a perfectly smooth finish for a higher-end interior
What does ceiling plastering and painting cost?
The price depends on the surface area, the condition of the ceiling and the desired finish. Bouwcons offers ceiling finishing as a separate package, so request a quote for an exact tailored price.
For combined assignments such as ceilings and walls, we always provide an attractive total rate.
